Experience exchange with Nordic countries for the uptake of best practices in the internal organization and quality management of forensic institutions

Within the scope of the project “Experience exchange with Nordic countries for the uptake of best practices in the internal organization and quality management of forensic institutions”, representatives of the State Police Forensic Service Department travelled to the forensic institutes of Iceland (11 – 13 May, 2022), Finland (20 – 22 September) and Sweden (11 – 13 October). The director, the head of the Analysis Bureau, the head of the Regional Bureau, as well as experts from the DNA unit and the deputy director visited examination laboratories and crime scene units to observe best practices in implementing LIMS systems and quality management procedures.

STUDY VISITS TO FORENSIC INSTITUTIONS IN ICELAND AND FINLAND

In January and February 2019 IT & Forensic Audio analysis experts of the Forensic Service Department (FSD) visited Forensic Institutions in Reykjavik (Iceland) and Vantaa (Finland) to exchange professional knowledge and skills. The study visit was implemented as a part of the Nordic Council of Ministers “Nordic-Baltic Mobility Programme for Public Administration” project in cooperation with the State Police of Latvia “Experience exchange in the field of forensic IT and Forensic Speech and Audio analysis by study visits to forensic institutions in Iceland and Finland”.

Minister of Internal Affairs Comes to Visit State Police Forensic Department

On Friday, 1st of March, Sandis Ģirģens, minister of Internal Affairs, visited State Police Forensic Department, to get acquainted with the situation in the department, to meet the employees and to evaluate the working environment of the personnel and their capacity.

Start of a New Project "Making of Forensic Department Expertise Laboratory System (ELIS)"

State Police of Ministry of Internal Affairs in collaboration with the Information Centre of Ministry of Internal Affairs consistent with settlement concluded on 22nd of February 2019, No. VP/IDF/2018/6, are implementing European Union Internal Safety Funds (further on- Fund) 2014-2020 National programme activities from 25th of February 2019 until 31st of January 2021 within ‘’Strengthening Capacity of the Forensic Department’’ a project ‘’ Making of Forensic Department Expertise Laboratory System (ELIS)’’. LATAK Accreditation

The main goals of the SP Forensic Department quality politics are to have an effective management system and a continuous perfection corresponding to the Standard LVS EN ISO/IEC 17025 ‘’General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories’’ requirements, with the purpose to further accuracy, fidelity and transparent working process in SP Forensic Department.

BALTFORDEX

The Latvian Ministry of the Interior State Police Forensic Service Department (FSD), in collaboration with the Ministry of the Interior Information Centre, the Lithuanian Police Forensic Science Centre, the Estonian Forensic Science Institute and the Swedish Nacional Forensic Centre, from January 1 2019 until June 30 2020, will be implementing the European Union Internal Security Fund 2014 – 2020 project “Increasing Capacity of Baltic State Forensics to Stimulate the Exchange of Forensic Data via Prüm (BALTFORDEX)” (Project No.821194).

ENFSI FSAAWG 20th Anniversary Meeting in Riga

On 13-14 September, the Forensic Service Department (FSD) of the State Police of Latvia organised the 20th meeting of the Forensic Speech and Audio Analysis Working Group (FSAAWG) of the European Network of Forensic Science Institutes (ENFSI) in Riga. 46 representatives from 19 countries participated in the conference.
